Belize’s September Celebrations are wrapping up and we are all catching our breath after running the gauntlet of parades. But don’t get too comfortable and sleepy because as the year draws to a close, Placencia becomes a hub of festive activity and plays host to a motley crew of international snowbirds and vacationers from all over the world. Whether you’re a foodie, an athlete, or simply looking to embrace the holiday spirit with a tropical twist—Placencia is the place to be in November and December! Here are three must-attend events to make your end-of-year getaway totally unforgettable.
Placencia Restaurant Week (November 3rd-10th, 2024)
Don’t miss the inaugural Placencia Restaurant Week from November 3 through 10 as it is sure to become a delicious tradition. Highlighting Belize’s culinary diversity, the peninsula’s best restaurants will serve up delectable three-course, price-fixed menus to thrill diners. The week-long event is perfect for food lovers eager to explore Placencia’s culinary scene and dozens of exceptional eateries. The chefs will showcase their creativity and offer unique dishes crafted from local ingredients like fresh seafood, tropical fruit and regional spices. At just $20.24* per person for lunch and $40.24* per person for dinner, these exclusive and exciting menus are an unbeatable dining deal you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss out on (*Belize Dollars, exclusive of beverages and gratuity).
End-of-the-World Marathon (December 8th,2024)
Break out those sneakers and get ready to run in paradise. The End-of-the-World Marathon is an iconic event that attracts serious athletes and casual competitors from near and far, and it takes place on Sunday, December 8th this year. The marathon and half-marathon course run the length of the picturesque Placencia Peninsula and affords participants scenic views of the sea on one side and the Maya Mountains looming over the lagoon to the other. Themed water stations manned by resident volunteers keep the racers’ spirits and hydration up while they pound their way along the mostly flat course. The race got its name from the (thankfully) failed doomsday prediction based off the ancient Mayan calendar artifact recovered at Cuello as well as in honor of author Aldous Huxley, who wrote in 1934 about Belize ‘If the world had any ends, British Honduras would certainly be one of them.’ Even if you’re not a runner, join as a spectator! Cheer on the trotters, take part in the post-race party and awards ceremony, and soak in the excitement and energy of Marathon Weekend.
Mistletoe Ball (December 14th, 2024)
A magical evening of elegance and holiday cheer, the annual Mistletoe Ball is a beloved tradition bringing residents and visitors together for a night of revelry. This fancy affair is the perfect excuse to get dolled up and a great way to embrace the Christmas spirit in the tropics. Held on Saturday, December 14th, Umaya Resort will host this year’s Mistletoe Ball. Get ready for a night of gourmet dining, live music by Gilharry 7 Band, dancing under the stars, and maybe even a visit from Santa Claus. Perfect for couples or groups looking for a glamorous evening out and an authentic, one-of-a-kind Placencia experience. The Mistletoe Ball is the highlight of the holiday season on the peninsula.
Placencia is often called a Goldilocks locale with a “just right” blend of relaxation and activity, tranquility and adventure. It has something for everyone, and these end-of-year events seem to support that notion. Whether you’re indulging in a culinary journey, challenging yourself to a marathon, or enjoying a night of holiday glamor, your time in Placencia will be filled with unforgettable moments to close out the year in style.
Enjoy these events during your November or December stay at Los Porticos Villas!
